Who we are
In 2022, a group of pals came together at their local beloved skate shop, The Shop, in Castlegar, BC for what they labelled “Thems and Femmes” nights. The energy, stoke, and bonding that transpired was beyond infectious. For many of them, this was a new and different energy than they had previously experienced at a typical skate session.
Welcome to BABETOPIA, a collective and event created for a group of underrepresented folks in the skateboard community. A space that encourages authenticity, freedom of expression without fear of judgement, and empowering the femininity within skateboard culture. This is not a “female only” skateboard camp. It is, however, a private camp where we have specifically chosen to invite individuals that align with our mission, and do not fit the typical gender norm within the traditional skateboard world. The skatecamp is hosted at Driftopia, a private skate compound in Pass Creek, BC. Each year, the camp has grown, and will continue to do so as they carve out the space in the industry. Once a year, for 48 hours, this camp has become what has been coined as “the best slumber party ever”. Meals are included, jams and progression events are held, and the BABES skate until their blood sweat and tears are left on the concrete.
Skateboarding has been a male dominated-boys club for most of its existence, so let’s make up for some lost time. Babetopia is more than just an event that is held annually at Driftopia. Babetopia is a movement, and the bus is RUNNING.
